เดิมเป็นสะพานที่มีโครงเหล็กโค้งข้างบนต่อมาในปี พ.ศ. 2442 พระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้สร้างใหม่เป็นสะพานโครงเหล็ก โดยพระราชทานนามว่า สะพานนรรัตนสถาน เนื่องจากอยู่ใกล้บ้านของจ้าพระยานรรัตนราชมานิต ต่อมาได้มีการสร้างสะพานนี้ใหม่ ดังที่ปรากฏในปัจจุบัน

เป็นสะพานคอนกรีตเสริมเหล็ก ราวสะพานคอนกรีต กลางราวสะพานทั้งสองข้างมีจารึกนามสะพานและปีที่บูรณะ (พ.ศ. 2486) ปลายสุดของราวสะพานทั้งสี่มุมเป็นเสาไฟฟ้าคอนกรีตทรงสอบขึ้นข้างบน
