วัดพระพิเรนทร์ตั้งอยู่เลขที่ 326 ถนนวรจักร แขวงบ้านบาตร เขตป้อมปราบศัตรูพ่าย กรุงเทพมหานคร สังกัดคณะสงฆ์มหานิกาย วัดพระพิเรนทร์เป็นวัดโบราณไม่ทราบนามวัดเดิม สันนิษฐานว่าสร้างขึ้นในสมัยอยุธยาตอนปลายประมาณ พ.ศ.2300 หรือก่อนนั้นไม่ปรากฏนามและประวัติผู้สร้าง ต่อมาเมื่อสมัยรัชกาลที่ 3 ประมาณ พ.ศ.2379 พระพิเรนทรเทพ (ขำ ณ ราชสีมา) เจ้ากรมพระตำรวจบัตรเจ้าพระยานครราชสีมา (ทองอินทร์ ณ ราชสีมา) ได้มาทำการบูรณะปฏิสังขรณ์เสนาสนะต่างๆ เป็นจำนวนมาก วัดนี้จึงได้มีนามว่า วัดขำเขมการาม ครั้น พ.ศ.2411 รัชกาลที่ 4 ทรงแปลงนามวัดเป็น วัดขำโคราช ใช้มาจนกระทั่ง พ.ศ.2430 จึงได้มีนามใหม่ว่า วัดพระพิเรนทร์ ทั้งนี้คงเรียกและใช้กันตามนามบรรดาศักดิ์ของผู้ที่บูรณะปฏิสังขรณ์ใหม่นั่นเอง วัดนี้ได้รับพระราชทานวิสุงคามสีมาเมื่อประมาณ พ.ศ.2430
