ในสมัยกรุงศรีอยุธยาตรงบริเวณที่ตั้งป้อมวิชัยประสิทธิ์ในปัจจุบัน และบริเวณฝั่งตรงข้ามอีกฟากหนึ่งของแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยาเป็นที่ตั้งของป้อม 2 ป้อม เรียกว่า ป้อมวิชาเยนทร์ ซึ่งสมเด็จพระนารายณ์มหาราชโปรดฯ ให้เจ้าพระยาวิชเยนทร์เป็นแม่กองสร้างขึ้น ต่อมาในสมัยกรุงธนบุรีพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าตากสินมหาราชโปรดฯ ให้ปรับปรุงและเปลี่ยนชื่อป้อมวิชาเยนทร์ทางฝั่งธนบุรีเป็น ป้อมวิชัยประสิทธิ์ ส่วนป้อมวิชาเยนทร์ทางฝั่งกรุงเทพฯ พระบาทสมเด็จพระพุทธยอดฟ้าจุฬาโลกโปรดฯ ให้รื้อลงพร้อมกับกำแพงกรุงธนบุรีฟากตะวันออกเมื่อคราวสร้างพระนครใหม่ในปี พ.ศ.2326
