คลองหลอด เป็นคลองขุดที่พระบาทสมเด็จพระพุทธยอดฟ้าจุฬาโลกมหาราชโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้ขุดขึ้นเมื่อพ.ศ. 2326 เมื่อครั้งย้ายเมืองหลวงจากกรุงธนบุรีมาอยู่ฝั่งพระนคร เชื่อมคลองคูเมืองเดิมออกไปบรรจบกับคลองรอบกรุง มี 2 คลอง เรียกกันตามลักษณะของคลองว่า คลองหลอด “ลุศักราช 1147 ปีมะเส็ง สัปตศก เกณธ์หน้าที่ข้าราชการในกรุงฯ ทั้งพระราชวังหลวงวังหน้าวังหลังและหัวเมืองทั้งปวงขุดรากกำแพงพระนครทั้งด้านแม่น้ำและด้านในคลองบรรจบกันโดยรอบ แล้วขุดคลองคูเมืองเดิมสองคลองไปออกบรรจบคลองคูใหม่นอกเมือง” (พระราชพงศวดาร ฉบับพระราชหัตถเลขา ฉบับที่2) คณะรัฐมนตรีได้มีมติเมื่อปี2510 ให้เป็นคลองที่ต้องอนุรักษ์ไว้ ในสมัยต่อมาชื่อคลองหลอดถูกนำไปเรียกคลองคูเมืองเดิม เนื่องจากการประกาศของสุขาภิบาลร.ศ.127(พ.ศ.2451) ให้แบ่งเรียกชื่อคลองคูเมืองเป็น3ตอน ตอนกลางคือระยะจากปากคลองหลอดวัดราชนัดดา ถึงปากคลองหลอดวัดราชนัดดา ถึงปากคลองหลอดวัดสุทัศน์ให้เรียกว่า คลองหลอด แต่ด้วยความเข้าใจคลาดเคลื่อนของคนรุ่นต่อมา จึงเรียกคลองคูเมืองเดิมทั้งสายว่า คลองหลอด (ชื่อบ้านนามเมืองในกรุงเทพฯ : ศันสนีย์ วีระศิลป์ชัย) ในโอกาสสมโภชกรุงรัตนโกสินทร์ 200ปี รัฐ

คลองหลอดวัดราชนัดดา เริ่มจากคลองคูเมืองเดิมตรงระหว่างโรงแรมรัตนโกสินทร์กับวัดบุรณศิริมาตยาราม ผ่านถนนตะนาว วัดมหรรณพาราม ถนนดินสอ ศาลาว่าการกรุงเทพมหานคร วัดราชนัดดาราม และถนนมหาไชย ไปบรรจบกับคลองรอบกรุงตรงบริเวณวัดราชนัดดาราม คลองนี้เดิมเรียกชื่อ "คลองหลอด" ไม่มีชื่อเฉพาะ แต่ต่อมาเรียกกันตามจุดที่ผ่าน เช่นเรียกว่า "คลองบุรณศิริฯ" "คลองวัดมหรรณพ์" "คลองวัดราชนัดดา" และ "คลองวัดเทพธิดา"
